Alyssa Making Pies
Change in Venue

I have made the decision to move this blog over to a new site

http://alyssaskitchenadventures.tumblr.com/

It’s easier this way - for me - promise

as for alyssa making pies i have neither the time nor the patience to move every single pie already made over there so this blog shall stay standing but no longer be in use.

kitchen adventures lets me do so much more than pie

fret not - pie venture is not dead. i repeat NOT dead

Gluten Free pumpkin pie

So for my favorite resident at work I chose to make her a gluten-free pumpkin pie for thanksgiving so she could enjoy thanksgiving dessert this year.

I found this all purpose flour and went with that as opposed to the boxed stuff I got for the last gluten-free pie I made. The crust I liked a lot better to make it this way - you can use this flour the same as regular flour and the texture was way better than the last one and I could actually roll it and it actually looked like dough!

I made sure Libby’s pumpkin was gluten - free as I wasn’t sure if they put other crap in it on the back it says “naturally gluten free” then I checked carnations evaporated milk - it says something along the lines of - like all milk this is gluten free.

So naturally I was like well excuse me asshole. I’m just trying to make sure I don’t get my resident sick you can’t be nice about it and say naturally. Jackasses.

So I made the pie with the mean milk.

Everything went fine - took it to work. Resident got to enjoy dessert.

I tried some today and I must say although the crust was much easier to make it was not easier to eat. I thought it was awful.

Jack says 32 Days until Christmas!

*btw this was not a pie from the pie book

Neil’s Chocolate Macadamia Nut Pie

Happy Halloween from my pups

if you haven’t had a chocolate covered macadamia nut ever then you need to re-assess the way your life is going.

also neil is a manager or chef or something of some hotel in hawaii where the majority of the world’s macadamia nuts come from

also the macadamia shell is the hardest nut shell to crack - it requires 300 lbs of force per square inch or centimeter or something tiny

truth

so i had high hopes for this pie.

i toasted the macadamia nuts (which are NOT cheap)

i made the bittersweet chocolate creme pie filling

i did the stuff it said to do

i whipped creamed the pie

it was awful

too bittersweet

but also not full of any flavor

we didn’t even finish one piece between the two of us

so to make up for it - bella crawled around with her witches broom

i did happen to make a pumpkin roll today (not pictured) that i saw trisha yearwood make on the food network the other day - 1st of all - when did trisha yearwood start cooking on the food network? and 2nd of all - this pumpkin roll was DELICIOUS mmmmmm

Peanut Butter Cheesecake Pie with Sour Cream-Brown Sugar Topping

This pie sounded very good on paper and so i made it!

Bella really wanted to eat some of it before i even made it - greedy greedy

this pie was very thick and difficult to mix and as you can see puffed up like crazy after baking

also i got these oven mitts at bed bath and beyond and have been using them to sneak christmas in early!!!

i made the topping and it was quite nasty looking

but i threw it on and it looked nasty

so i chopped up some of those peanut butter chips and threw them on top.

it didn’t help its appearance at all.

the pie was good but VERY thick and heavy and didn’t really sit very well in one’s stomach.

that is all.

Pumpkin Praline Pie

so this pie - this pie was a fiasco from beginning to end

okay well mid beginning - the filling was fine but then i got distracted by my making dinner skills and i took the pie out at 20 minutes, when what i was supposed to do was turn the pie at 20 minutes and bake for another 40-45 minutes.

so the next day i baked it for longer…risky risky i know but when it came out it was fim and fine so i figured we were okay.

while i was making the topping i realized i did not purchase enough pecans. was going to throw in walnuts. was told not to. *sigh*

then i realized i hadn’t bought heavy cream, i bought light cream. so i had to kinda make heavy cream.

so i baked this and the praline top was all liquidy but i figured it would harden.

it did not.

as we’re leaving to go to our friends house my legs feel unnaturally warm. because the pie is now leaking out all over my lap.

so we turned around, i changed pants, abandoned the pie and bought a pie.

ramage came home and ate some of the liquid pie anyway. he says it’s delicious….

Apple Pie with Cheddar Cracker Topping

This Pie both frightened and intrigued me. I like apple pies. I like cheez-its. How can one go wrong? Well, one would naturally assume you might be going wrong when you attempt to combine the two.

The book did not specify what kind of apples to use (not that it matters because I tend to ignore his suggestions and use the apples I want to use) so I went for half red and half green because, well visually it looked like christmas ONLY 78 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!!!! You ready?????? anywho i’ve also always seriously disliked the taste of only red apple pie and i always throw in a green one or two so i went all halfsies at it.

Now, I’ve purchased the ingredients for this very pie x3. Each time i ate the cheez-its before I made the pie. But this time I vowed to eat no cheez-its until the pie was made. I failed btw, i totally ate some the night before but I left enough for the pie. Anywho it was only on this fourth attempt at making this pie that I realized that the recipe wanted WHITE CHEDDAR CHEEZ-IT’S and WHITE CHEDDAR CHEESE and every other time I got regular cheez its and regular cheddar cheese….read more carefully, Alyssa. This tends to be a problem for me …

anywho - i made the pie. Jack wanted to eat some and became perplexed when I told him no.

it seemed intriguing.

i thought it was an okay pie. It wasn’t amazing - i probably won’t make it again. but it was good enough…ramage disagreed.

tiebreaker - erika - will force her to eat a slice when she gets here. muahahahahaha. k i’ll tell you what she thinks later.

Pear-Raspberry Pie with a Lattice Top

I was quite excited for this pie because I have never done the whole lattice top thing.

I picked up these pears - bosc. I’m not sure how they differ from the green pears. when i peeled them i saw that the peel was green underneath…so they are dirty pears?

Then I did the lattice top thing

it was not at all difficult but still very exciting

Jack was pretty excited too - in case you couldn’t tell

This lattice topping makes for a very good looking pie

HOWEVER, i was not a fan of this pie. It was not good.

Pear Pie with Almond Cake Topping

Another pear pie indeed!

standard pie ingredients EXCEPT for that topping

i was intrigued by a cake topping

not a crumb topping

i became less intrigued when i realized it had coconut in it

bella was no longer intrigued either

so the pie was made

looks real pretty

i won’t eat it

ramage liked it enough but he said it had some kind of watery aftertaste…which i don’t quite understand and then he took it to work because he loves his coworkers that much.

i got your back CMH, he said that weird aftertaste i said well i am NOT bringing that to work.

anywho, it looked pretty

Fancy Sweet Potato Pie

Some time ago I made a Traditional Sweet Potato Pie.

 this time it was FANCY

whatever that means.

note how penny seems to have claimed nala as her own play toy, dragged her into her bed and everything

so i baked these damn sweet potatoes for an hour, and scooped out 2.5 cups

then i once again realized how small my food processor is, halfway through i had to dump it all into the mixer and set that mixer on high

the pie baked

note how penny has now gotten up and removed nala from her bed. penny and nala apparently had some problems. but penny doesn’t want to talk about it. so stop asking

pie cooled.

top with whipped cream.

eat it.

tastes just like pumpkin pie

just like the traditional sweet potato pie…

this sweet potato pie is just a stuck up sweet potato pie
